3+ Color Photos of Frida Kahlo That Capture Her Iconic Spirit

In the 1930s and 1940s, photographer Nickolas Muray photographed Frida Kahlo's colorful photo collection.

In 1931, Muray and Kahlo met in Mexico. Over the next 10 years, they engage in an ongoing romantic relationship, culminating in lifelong friendships and beautiful personal portrait collections. "Photography, fortunately, for me is not only a profession but also a contact between people - to understand human nature and record, if possible, the best in every individual," Muray explains.

As a great admirer of self-portraits, Frida Kahlo's depictions are not far away and few of them. In addition to its own painted depiction, contemporary photographers often use Kahlo as their photo subject, usually shot in traditional black-and-white films. From 1937 to 1946, photographer Nickolas Muray photographed a number of polychromatic photographs that expertly captured the colorful spirit of the artist.

Just like his own portrait, Kahlo is not caught in Muray's photos; Instead, he was shown posing for the camera. As he stood in front of the empty stucco walls, bright and patterned backdrops, and the sun-lit outdoor scenery, Muray skillfully showed his evocative expressions and his distinctive ensemble jets. Dressed in her distinctive outfits-including full skirts, patterned tops, colorful scarves, and, of course, Kahlo flower-colored ornaments are exhibited prominently through intimate (and visible) photos.
